Three Years on Solar, Zero Months of Fees
A real owner’s take on the eufy SoloCam S340 — light, shade, storage, and everything the spec sheet leaves out.
Still a heavyweight in no-subscription home security. The S340 delivers 3K clarity and true 360° coverage with no monthly bill — just keep the solar panels in real sun and add a WiFi extender for a big yard.
Let’s talk tech that actually lasts. I’ve had the eufy SoloCam S340 system running for three years, and I’m ready to spill exactly what works, what doesn’t, and why this setup is still a heavyweight in the home-security game.
Section 01
The “no-fee” freedom
First things first: the best part of this kit is the zero monthly fees. Most brands nickel-and-dime you for cloud storage. With eufy you make a one-time purchase and you’re done — no subscriptions, no hidden costs, just straight-up security that keeps recording as long as the camera does.
Section 02
Installation: a 7-minute breeze
- Open the box: You’ve got your HomeBase S380 and your cameras ready to go.
- Sync up: Download the app, scan the QR code on the HomeBase, and pair the camera. This part is a breeze because the tech just works.
- Solar prep: Screw the removable solar panels onto the cameras before you head outside.
- The Clip Advantage: For most of the house, the included clips make life easy. Instead of drilling into every corner, you’re just tightening bolts to get a secure grip.
- The Heavy Lifting: As you found out, the real time-sink is moving the ladder, climbing up, and ensuring those bolts are tight so your 360° Pan & Tilt doesn’t wobble.
- Versatility Check: Remember, while you’re up there, you have options! You can mount these vertically on a ceiling for full coverage or horizontally on a wall.
Section 03
Power struggles: solar vs wired
Here’s the thing about “forever power” — it needs the sun.
The sunny side
For cameras that get good light, the battery stays rock steady. Even in the dead of winter, the lowest charge I saw hovered around 15–35%. Practically speaking, I never thought about charging them.
The shady side
My front camera was a different story. The neighbor’s house blocked the sun most of the day, and without those rays the battery lasted only about two months on a single charge. So I pulled the solar panel off that one and hard-wired it instead problem solved, and no more midnight low-battery pings.
Section 04
The brains: HomeBase S380
To get the most out of the system, the HomeBase S380 (also sold as HomeBase 3) is the tower that ties it together. It connects to your router by ethernet and talks to every camera on the network.
Expandable storage
Up to 16TB local
Add your own SATA hard drive and keep a massive archive of clips no cloud, no fees.
BionicMind AI hub
Human · pet · vehicle
The smart hub enables BionicMind, which tells people, pets and vehicles apart and learns familiar faces.

Good news: it works without a hub
You can absolutely run the S340 standalone. Out of the box it’s built to skip the hub, the cloud and the fees entirely:
- Built-in storage: 8GB of on-camera eMMC storage saves recordings directly to the device no external hub required.
- AI on board: even without a HomeBase, the camera’s AI distinguishes people, vehicles and pets and notifies you by preference.
- Full hardware: you still get the complete 3K dual-camera system, 8x zoom and 360° pan & tilt.
Adding the HomeBase later is a pure upgrade it doesn’t unlock the basics, it expands them (16TB of storage and the enhanced BionicMind face recognition).
Section 06
The storage lowdown: 8GB vs 16TB
One of the coolest hidden perks is that the S340 doesn’t just stream — it records to 8GB of built-in storage on the camera itself.
Running without a HomeBase, those 8GB are your best friend: zero monthly fees and no cloud subscription because the footage lives on the device. Keep it real, though — at 3K resolution that space fills up fast. The system is designed to manage the local space automatically, cycling older clips so you’re not erasing anything by hand and can focus on the alerts that matter.
If you want to hoard every 14-second clip without a second thought, the HomeBase S380 turns that “tiny” 8GB into a powerhouse supporting up to 16TB of local storage.
| Capability | Standalone | + HomeBase S380 |
|---|---|---|
| Local storage | 8GB on-camera | Up to 16TB (SATA) |

| AI detection | Human / pet / vehicle | + BionicMind faces |

| Connection | WiFi to app | Ethernet hub to router |
Section 07
Connectivity & the feed: the honest truth
It wasn’t all sunshine at first. My backyard camera hit connectivity issues because it sat too far from the router. The fix from my own setup: I moved the router toward the center of the house and added a Nighthawk WiFi extender, which steadied the connection for good.
Keep in mind there’s a slight stream delay in my testing the app feed runs about a 3-second lag, so it’s near-live, not truly instant. 3 years of daily use

The verdict
Still a top-tier pick after three years
After three years, the eufy SoloCam S340 remains a top choice for anyone who wants high-res, 360° security without being tethered to a monthly bill. Just make sure your solar panels are actually in the sun, and grab a WiFi extender if your yard is massive. Do those two things and this is as close to set-and-forget as outdoor security gets.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Does the eufy SoloCam S340 work without a HomeBase?
Yes. It runs standalone on 8GB of built-in storage with full on-camera AI, 3K video, 8x zoom and 360° pan & tilt — no fees. A HomeBase S380 is optional and adds up to 16TB of storage plus BionicMind face recognition.
Are there monthly fees for the eufy S340?
No. It’s a one-time purchase with no required subscription. Footage stores locally on the camera or on a HomeBase, so there are no cloud fees.
How long does the battery last on solar?
In direct sun it stays topped up year-round — rarely below 15–35% even in winter. In heavy shade a charge lasted only about two months in my use, so shaded cameras may be better hard-wired.
How much storage does the HomeBase S380 support?
Up to 16TB of local storage using your own SATA hard drive. It connects to your router by ethernet and acts as the central hub for your eufy cameras.
Is the live feed truly real-time?
Close, but not instant — expect roughly a 3-second delay on the app feed in real-world use.
